CNN —Investigators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating a fatal crash involving a Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with advanced driving assistance technology. Ford shows off the new model 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT during the Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place convention center in Chicago, Illinois on February 8, 2024. Federal investigators are looking at dozens of crashes involving so-called advanced driver assistance, or ADAS, systems. ADAS systems handle basic driving tasks such as keeping the vehicle in its lane while maintaining a safe distance behind vehicles ahead, usually in highway driving only. Fourteen of these systems, including two from Ford, were recently rated by the private Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

CHICAGO – Kia Motors is adding a hybrid model to its Carnival minivan to meet increasing consumer demand for the technology and assist in meeting tightening federal fuel economy standards. Hybrids are a growing option for automakers as they strive to make vehicles more efficient and avoid costly federal fuel economy and emissions standards. Hybrid vehicles typically include a traditional internal combustion engine combined with EV technologies such as an electric motor and small battery. They function like traditional vehicles and do not need to be plugged in like EVs or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The Carnival hybrid, announced at the Chicago Auto Show, is expected to go on sale alongside an updated version of the traditional minivan in the summer.

Stellantis’s brands at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this month. The largest U.S. auto maker by profit is the one that investors often treat as Detroit’s third wheel: Chrysler. The North American arm of automotive group Stellantis , which is roughly equivalent to the old Chrysler business with brands such as RAM, Jeep and Dodge, generated adjusted operating income of roughly 14 billion euros last year, equivalent to $14.9 billion at today’s exchange rate. The comparable numbers for General Motors and Ford were $13 billion and $9.2 billion, respectively. Tesla doesn’t split its business geographically, but made $13.7 billion in operating profit globally.

Stellantis NV is planning to distribute $4.47 billion in dividends to shareholders and buy back up to $1.60 billion worth of shares after revenue and net profit surged in 2022, a year marked by a steep rise in electric-vehicle sales. Stellantis and other car makers have had to contend with supply chain snags caused by the war in Ukraine and a surge in Covid-19 infections in China, a key car market.
The subscription program will allow users to rent an electric car for as low as $699 per month. The South Korean car manufacturer announced the start of its Evolve+ electric vehicle subscription service at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show on Thursday. The Evolve+ app is available on the Google Play store and the Apple App Store. It's also advertised as a way to test out an electric vehicle with no long-term commitment.
